How to Find the Coveted White T-Shirt

You know what would go great with that asymmetrical skirt you just bought? A white t-shirt. How about those black skinny jeans? A white t-shirt. How about that sequin pencil skirt, tailored work pants, mini skirt, or boyfriend jeans? That’s right, a white t-shirt.

The white T-shirt is a simple basic that often gets overlooked, but it’s one of the most versatile pieces in my closet. It is the quintessential, all-american, flattering, tuck it in or tuck it out, classic piece in your wardrobe that will never go out of style. It’s also extremely difficult to find the perfect one.

My standard weekend uniform typically consists of black skinny jeans, black pumps, and a loosely fitted white t-shirt, plus or minus a tailored blazer. For a more casual look, I pair my white t-shirt with dark blue skinny jeans and nude flats. For an item of clothing that rotates that frequently in my closet, I want to make sure I have one with just the right fit. Keep in mind, you’ll never find a one style fits all t-shirt. Depending on the look you’re trying to create, you may want one with a v-neck, boat-neck, tight fit or looser fit. There are different cuts and brands that work better depending on your body type and whether you’re tucking the shirt in, half-way in or leaving it out.

I bet you didn’t think a white t-shirt could get this complicated. Finding ‘the one’ can take a while. Here are my top 5 tips to keep in mind when buying your favorite white tee so you can spend less time searching and more time rocking that all-american look.

The V-Neck: The v-neck is a sexier version of the classic white tee. Find one that is not too snug or lose and you’ll end up with a staple piece that can be worn with anything. Add some layered necklaces for a more textured look. The soft drape of the Everlane tee is difficult to find and the cut looks great under a tailor blazer.

The Graphic: I like wearing graphic tee’s with a fitted pencil skirt or pleated maxi skirts to add a casual component to an otherwise dressy outfit. The Vive Le Brunch shirt by Wendy’s Lookbook has beautiful colors and bonus, who doesn’t love brunch? I also love the charming Lips and Lashes Tee by Sincerely Jules. It goes out of stock often so catch it while it’s still available.

The Boyfriend: This t-shirt style offers a more oversized fit and works great with skinny jeans or tailored work pants. You may have to play with the sizing a bit here but err on the side of caution by sizing down so you have the right amount of looseness without the shirt appearing too baggy.
